Why the kitchen fails — it is the box, not the layout
A modular kitchen is a row of boxes. The doors, the granite, the chimney, the soft-close hinges — all of that usually survives. What fails is the carcass: the panels making up the box, especially the bottom ones near the floor and the ones flanking the sink.
In a Gujarat kitchen those panels take a beating every single day. Steam off the pressure cooker. Water down the cabinet front when someone washes a large vessel. The floor mopped twice a day, wicking up into the toe kick. Then add the climate — Rajkot and Ahmedabad both push past 43°C in summer, and that heat works on plywood glue lines. Commercial ply or an MR sheet used to save a few thousand rupees starts swelling at the cut edges within four or five years. The panel puffs, the laminate lifts at the corner, the shutter sits crooked because the hinge screw has lost its grip in a softened edge.

What to specify for a Rajkot or Ahmedabad kitchen
- Carcass & base panels: 18 mm waterproof engineered board. This is non-negotiable for the box. Under 1% water absorption (IS 2380) means the edge does not swell even where it is cut and left unsealed inside the cabinet.
- Shutters: 18 mm engineered board with laminate, acrylic or a membrane finish. Same board is fine; the finish is your choice.
- Toe kick / skirting: engineered board — this is the piece that sits in the mop water. Plywood here is a guaranteed failure.
- Loft and tall units: 18 mm engineered board — heavy loads over long spans, and the board does not sag over 20 years the way a tired ply shelf does.
- Do not mix. Using a cheaper board for the hidden carcass to save money is the mistake I see most. The hidden part is the part that gets wet.
The cost, honestly
An engineered board carcass adds a modest premium over commercial plywood. Set that against a full carcass replacement in year five, plus a decade of termite treatment on the ply, and over 10 years the engineered board is clearly the cheaper path.
