For interior furniture, shutters and panelling, an engineered NFC board is the best plywood alternative. It is the only common option that resists water, termites, fire and formaldehyde at the same time, and it machines like wood so your existing carpenters and CNC files still work. Solid wood and marine plywood keep a place for a few structural and semi-exterior jobs, but for kitchens, wardrobes, wall panels and commercial fit-outs, engineered board is the material that stops the replacement cycle.
The reason plywood fails indoors is not bad manufacturing. It is the material itself: thin wood veneers glued in layers. Wood moves with humidity, the glue lines are the weak point, and termites read the whole thing as food. Every plywood grade — MR, BWR, BWP, even 710 — is a different answer to "how long before the wood gives up", not a fix for the wood.

For indoor use, yes — on the two things that decide furniture lifespan, moisture movement and pest resistance, engineered NFC board wins outright. Plywood keeps an edge only where you need a nailable structural sheet for site work or a semi-exterior surface, and even there marine plywood, not commercial ply, is the fair comparison.

The board drops into a normal carpentry or modular workflow. Standard thickness calls:
Cutting is done with the same CNC and panel saws as plywood. Carbide tooling, normal feed rates. No health precautions beyond usual dust extraction because there is no formaldehyde in the dust.
At purchase, an engineered NFC board runs about 15 to 25% above commercial BWP plywood, and roughly level with a good 710-grade sheet. The number that matters is the 10-year cost, because plywood carries a replacement and a treatment cost that the board does not.
